Panchaloha Antique Finish Nataraja Statue - Lord Shiva while dancing had posed for 108 karanas. Karana means 'action' and in the context of dance it indicates a coordinated action of the body, the hands and the feet.
Shiva on one hand holds agni or fire and dhamru or drum on the other hand. Shiva's s other two hands are left free performing his dance posture.
Shiva's Tandava is described as a vigorous dance that is the source of the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution. Tandava symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. Ananda Tandava, Rudra Tandava, Sandhya Tandava, Vrishchika Tandava are some of the thandavas of lord shiva.
