Significance of the temple:

Perumal feeling thirsty ordered Garuda to bring Him water. As Garuda delayed to return, Adisesha struck the ground with his tail, made a spring and offered water to the Lord. This spring is called Sesha Theertham. The region was called Tiruvaheendrapuram to honour Adisesha, who was originally called Vaheendran. Vaheendra is believed to have propitiated Indra, the king of celestial deities. Tiruvaheendrapuram became Thiruvanthipuram with the passage of time

It is believed that those who offer jaggery, pepper and salt in the water tank of the temple are blessed with good fortune, health and a prosperous life.

The water in the tank is also very sacred and is believed to cure rare skin diseases.

It is believed that a part of the sanjeevani hill is believed to have been dropped nearby to this temple. It contains various valuable herbs which are of medicinal importance.

All the more, the river flowing beside the temple known as the Garuda Nadhi is considered as pious as the Ganges. It is red in color is also its specialty.

Another unique feature of this temple is that, it is the only shrine which has an idol of Lord Vishnu showcasing his third eye. Legends have spoken that only Lord Shiva has a third eye and hence this temple is very unique in nature. The idol with the third eye is placed right in front of the main gate of the temple.

Though the presiding deity is Devanatha Swamy, the temple is famously known for Hayagriva

The temple is the only historical temple in South India to house an image of Hayagriva, an avatar of Vishnu with horse face. Two iniquitous horses, named Madhu and Kaitaba, are believed to have taken the Vedas away from the world. Brahma sought the help of Vishnu who propitiated in the form of Hayagriva. Hayagriva is believed to be the god of knowledge and wisdom, who is believed to have restored the Vedas to Brahma. Hayagriva is also called Hayavadhana. Vedanta Desikar has eulogized Hayagriva in his work

Temple Legend:

Legends unfold the story that there was a time when the Asuras had defeated devas of the world in a very bad manner. This was due to the arrogance along with pride of devas. After their defeat, devas, sought the help of Lord Vishnu to help and protect them. He used his powerful Chakra and killed all the demons at one go. He also appeared in front of them in the form of trinity- Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Later on, in this same spot the temple of Hayagreevar Perumal Vishnu was built up which was worshipped for Lord Vishnu.
