Legend of Thiruchendur Murugan Temple:

This is the only shrine of Lord Murugan, which is located on the sea shore. Usually all His temples will be on Hill Tops.

As per the Legend, Lord Murugan, Commander-In-Chief of Devas encamped here at Thiruchendur. Murugan installed Siva Linga to offers prayers, for which Mayan, the architect for Devas constructed the temple.

Demon Surapadman had captured Devas. AS per the orders of Lord Shiva, Lord Muruga came here to free Devas from Surapadman. From here, He sent the message to the demon Surapadma at Veera Mahendrapuri through Veerabahu Devar to let go Devas or he has to face the battle.

Surapadman ignored Lord Muruga's message and challenged him for the battle. Lord Muruga recieved the divine Lance (Vel) weapon from His mother at Sikkal to beat Surapadma. Lord Muruga won the battle with the asura Surapadman

The victory against the demon is still celebrated here as Skanda Shasti .

Significance of Temple:

Tiruchendur is the only Muruga temple where Raja Gopuram is situated in western gate. This temple was not constructed by Kings, it was built by three holy saints. This temple is also the largest temple among all the temples built by saints.

The Tiruchendur temple does not have any eastern gateway contrary to all Hindu temple architecture. This is the only temple in Tamil Nadu where sanctum sanctorum is below the ground level.

The 133 feet Rajagopura, built in the shores of Bay of Bengal, very near to the sea, just within 200 meters is still a mystery and an outstanding example for the Tamil temple architecture and an example for extreme civil engineering of Ancient Tamils.
