Temple Legend:

Goddess Parvathi wished to have an earthly wedding with Lord Shiva. There was a fight between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Lord Shiva cursed here to transform into a cow asked her to go to earth. Lord Vishnu approached Shiva and asked him to reconcile with Goddess Parvathi. Lord Shiva said that Parvathi wants to have earthly wedding and the events will eventually lead to that. He told Lord Vishnu to escort Goddess Parvathi to Cauvery River and take a holy dip, by doing so she will transform back to human form. Parvathi got transformed to human form and went to Sage Bharata muni and asked him to accept her as his offspring. The saint then went to Lord Shiva and asked him to marry his daughter, thus Goddess Parvathi was granted her wish of having a wedding on earth.
